Stud poker strategy volume 2
April 21, 2008
In the last post we found out that there is a strategy for all poker games, no matter which one you decide you want to play. The tricky part comes when you have to figure out the strategy, and it gets worse when you have to master it. We said that we will, over the next few posts, show you a bit of strategy that will help you become better at the game of stud poker. That is if you can remember everything you read when you get to the poker table. Today we will be taking a look at exercising your poker body, so here we go.
In a game of poker you always have to be on your… well… game. More so with a game of stud poker, you must have your wits about you, you must be sharp and on the lookout all of the time. So we found a way that will help you with staying sharp all the time, whether you are at the table or not. You might be thinking why you would need to be sharp away from the table, but think of the very unlikely situation where you are one day walking down the street and you are suddenly dragged into an unmarked car and forced to play a hand of poker with a very bored millionaire. You will have to be sharp then, you could win a million bucks.
In the below bit we will look at how to exercise away from the poker table. And then, in our next post, we will look at how to stay sharp at the table. Okay, we have all come across the time where we just cannot play poker, reasons for this will be your own, you might not have money, or your wife grounded you or something. You will however still need to stay on top of your game, and the best way to keep practicing, is by this great new software called Turbo Seven Card Stud, made by Wilson. This is a great tool, not only to polish up on your skills but also if you are a new player and want to get into the game. The Wilson game has a very useful tool that allows you to track through all of your completed games, so you can see where you went wrong. The software also helps you by telling you the move that it would have made and that would probably have won you the hand. The great thing about software like this is that you are able to check your mistakes, and rectify them in the next round without having to lose any money. You can change strategies and see how that fairs up against your computer opponents and even change difficulty level if you need a quick polish before a real table game.
The other exercises that you will need to do to help with concentration is almost like the game where you need to remember pictures on overturned blocks to match them up on other overturned blocks. It will help if you played this game with the cards, start with eight cards first, face down. Turn them over and see how many you can remember in order, then try it with more cards once you have the eight in a row until you eventually end up playing with the whole deck. The next thing you probably want to do, and this is something that most of the pros do, is read a lot of poker books. Books on strategy, books on playing and things like that. Finally, along with mental stamina and exercise, you want to keep in physical shape. Because as we all know, the two go hand in hand don’t they?
Is there a stud poker strategy?
April 20, 2008
Mostly, when playing against your average stud poker player, you can make much of your money from playing in a simple and normal way. Your money will come from your opponents mistakes, because he is either not concentrating or because he is not that good of a player. The simple rule is: bet as much as you want when you see that you are the chip leader, however, when you are falling behind of the pack, then well, just simple give up, before you lose it all.
The next thing you want to do is chase when you see that you have the pot odds to make the moves. That is where you will make most of your money, well at least most of the time. Sometimes, however, you will have to get a bit tricky in your approach. This is only the first of many stud poker strategy blogs for this site. Later down the line we will cover bluffs, and we will cover semi bluffs. We will then move on to things like raising on the come, and then raising again to knock a opponent out of the game. Also we will include free card buying, and playing with the pot sizes. So if you where asking if there really is a stud poker strategy, the answer is yes, and you will learn all about it right here.
If you want to learn these and other strategies in the complex game of poker keep it locked here to Poker Bonus Time. We will be posting one strategy blog for the next few days, all linked to the game of Stud poker. So to be a Stud at the game, read on and you will surely win the next game you play in.
The Poker Star European Tour and other news
April 19, 2008
As we all know the Poker Stars European poker tour just recently ended with the Grand Final at the Monte Carlo Casino. As we might have guessed it was a bumpy and exciting ride, with many people speculating on the winner, and if it will be an American once again. It was reported that the day had to be started early. This was due to the fact that day 4 could not come to a timely end on account of the final table of 8. The first to be sent home on the final table was Rasmussen, with only 20 minutes of game play completed.
Final game play finally saw the win going to, not an American, but to the new chip leader of the Poker Star European Poker Tour Grand Final, Glen Chorny from Canada. Glen who played a really brave and outstanding game of poker walked away with an astonishing 3 198 500 million dollars, stealing the pot from Denes Kalo.
At the European Poker tour held recently in San Remo, Jason Mercier came out victorious, after wining £869 000. And to think that he almost opted out to tag along with a few friends to Holland for a little field trip.

PLAYING TEXAS HOLD’ EM ON THE IPOD
April 15, 2008
If you want to hone your Texas Hold ‘Em skills, there are many outlets to practice the game. One of them is playing the game on your iPod. The game is available to download onto your iPod and play whenever the mood strikes you.
The game is simple enough, you just try to win tournament and build up your pot so you can enter higher and higher stakes events. The bigger the tournaments, the harder the game becomes.
The controls of game are pretty simple. You choose to check, bet or fold. The game pits you against computer players. You win the game on the iPod if you go through and the rest of the players have folded or the final card is dealt on the flop.
You need to be careful however with the control of the game. If you want to speed things up, especially when the computer is playing, you can use the select button. But press it too many times and you will make the wrong input for yourself. Unfortunately, there is no undo command, so you’re stuck with your move.
The game is unrealistic in another part, too, in that you are only playing against a maximum of six players. In real life games, you are usually playing against eight or 10, which changes the strategy.
Of course, your ability to practice real strategy is always going to be a little off when you are playing on the iPod, because you are going up against a computer’s decision making. That means you won’t get the same reaction to bluffing or betting that you would get from an actually opponent. You will be able to go through the game and take advantage of that weakness.
And if you are new to playing the game and trying to learn the rules, there really is no tutorial. You can’t ask the game if you are doing the right thing or if you are using the right strategy.
All in all, playing Texas Hold ‘Em, let alone trying to learn the game, isn’t much of a success. In many ways, the game isn’t much better than one of those electronic handheld games that are sold for a few bucks.
If you are looking for a computer-based way to play Texas Hold ‘Em, it’s better to try one of the many online web sites where you can actually interact with players who are making real-time decisions. That will be a real challenge to how you learn the game.
How To Go All In Before the Flop
March 30, 2008
So you have been dealt a pair of aces and you are considering going all in before the dealer puts down the flop in order to make a splash with the hand and have a chance at a big pot.
But there are risks that you need to consider before you decide to go all in at the very start of the game.
First, when you go all in, there is a chance that you will be called either by someone who has a smaller pile of chips than you, because they have a chance to double up if they win, or by the chip leader, who has a chance to knock you out, while not losing many of his own chips. For you it will be the difference between getting out of the game or getting back in it. It is a high risk, high reward situation for you.
But just as there is a chance for you to hit big with a big pot, there is also a chance that everyone will leave you hanging. Since the chance of getting a pair of aces is so high and going all in before the flop is such a sign of a strong hand, the rest of the players might all fold, and all you are left is a pot with just the blinds in it.
If you have the best cards sitting in your hand, the betting game will change for the entire table. You are going to stop worrying about what the other players have to trying to figure out how to get the most chips you can into that pile in the middle. You you’re your all-in bet to be worth it. You know you have the best cards, no matter what happens - at that point. You want to make sure there are plenty of bets made before you go all in before the flop. The better you are at working this, the longer it will have to be before you have to show the cards are laid on the table.
This might be a tough move for you, especially if you are a player without much experience, who might not be able to read the other opponents very well. If you are one of the lesser experienced players, you may just want to go all in as soon as you can and leave it up to the deal of the cards to see if you can win, rather than trying to pump up the pile. You want to go for it and go for it quick, so you may be able to score eventually.
Player Earns European Trip
March 30, 2008
Pacific Poker is sending Canadian player Dave Moreau over the Atlantic next month after he won a spot in the European Poker Tour San Remo Tournament.
Moreau, who plays at Pacific Poker under the name of “dave4008”, earned enough points on the site to earn himself a spoke in the EPT San Remo event, which begins April 1st, 2008. The seat is worth 5,000 Euros.
Moreau just started playing online poker sixth months ago and got serious in the last two months, playing up to for times a week.
The prize package for Moreau, 40, includes the tournament buy-in plus money for travel and hotel stay.
San Remo is a popular resort in Liguria on Italy’s northwest coast. San Remo is also widely accepted as the birthplace of the five-card stud variation “Telesina”. It is dealt like normal five-card stud but with an additional final round where a sixth community card is dealt. The game is played with a stripped deck (8s and better).
Moreau said winning the Pacific freeroll may have gotten him ready for the EPT event. He told Pokerlistings.com that he expects “a lot of European players, and they are usually pretty good players I find.”
The freeroll field included players from Italy, France and Germany. Moreau won in the end against grandp57 from Italy.
”My winning hand was A-J against A-2,” Moreau said. “My opponent was on the big blind, so I think I raised about three times the big blind, and then my opponent went all-in, so I called.”
Neither got any help from the flop, the turn or the river, which was a seven.
“I was now getting a lot more nervous, but the river was a seven,” Moreau said. “I then celebrated with my son. I was very excited that I will have the opportunity to play in such a huge tournament such as the San Remo EPT event.”
Moreau said he will be playing even more on Pacific Poker. Who knows where else he could end up with another run through a tournament?
“I think it is a great poker room,” Moreau said about Pacific Poker. “You sometimes get soft competition. The guaranteed tournament pools are very good.”
Moreau is just another success story from the online game rooms and show that with a just a little bit of playing time behind you, any players can find themselves at a high stakes event anywhere in the world.
Tells: Does Your Opponent Have A Good Hand?
March 28, 2008
If you are always getting stumped during your poker game, one of the problems you may be having is an inability to read another players’ tells. This is the kind of advanced strategy that separates really good players from inexperienced ones.
But what should you be looking for when it comes to tells? There are a lot of body language secrets that you can learn that will determine how you bet and whether or not you can win your poker showdowns when there are big pots sitting in front of you.
Here are some of the tips which can tell you that the person sitting across the table from you has a good hand:
- They act like they have nothing or are too disinterested in what is going on. This aloof move usually is a bit of overacting. They have a strong hand, but they are “slow playing”. Not acting exciting in this case, is a smokescreen for how excited they really are.
- Nervous shaky and quick breathing. Maybe your opponent can’t really hand back just how excited they really are and they become really nervous. Watch their hands and their breathing, especially as they make a bet.
- Talking to themselves. This is another case of overcompensation on the part of your opponent. If they keep asking themselves why they are betting or why they are acting crazy, that means they are trying to throw you off the scent of what they really have in their hand. They probably have something big.
- Keeping an eye on the chips. If someone has a big hand, they will always be adding up in their mind what they can do to win. For some players this means looking at the chips they have, and trying to figure out their next big bet. If they have a good hand, they will be thinking ahead like that.
Now here’s the tricky part. If you are playing against someone who is really experienced, they may throw out a tell that is the opposite of what they are doing. They may have a weak hand, but tell like they have a strong one. That’s why it’s good for you to know what kind of player you are up against, so you can be ready for whatever they do.
If you are able to discern a true tell from a false one and when a player is holding something good or something bad, then you will be on your way to being a winning poker player.
